QUESTION: HOW DOES LEAD EXPOSURE CAUSE DELINQUENT BEHAVIOUR?

ANSWER:  During the third trimester of pregnancy, two parts of the brain are under development and extremely vulnerable to lead exposure; the hippocampus and the prefrontal cortex.

The hippocampus is the part of the brain which is primarily responsible for functions related to learningmemory and emotion, allowing social and moral values to develop.

The prefrontal cortex will continue its development right into adolescence. Aggression and impulse control are shaped by this part of the brain.

It is well documented that high levels of lead in bone and brain tissue correlate closely with delinquency.
