QUESTION: DOES LEAD TRANSFER FROM MOTHER TO FETUS?

ANSWER:  Absolutely!  Lead transfers from mother to unborn child making the developing brain of the fetus very vulnerable.  Expectant mothers must be extremely vigilant to avoid all potential lead sources, however a woman’s exposure to lead while she is pregnant is not the only concern.  Lead accumulates in bone and tissue over a woman’s lifetime.  During pregnancy, this stored lead also transfers directly to the fetus.
